How To Draw 3d Pedestrian Crossing

An outback boondocks in western Queensland has joined an unconventional global tendency aimed at slowing motorists down near pedestrian crossings.

Boulia, in the eye of the channel land in cardinal-west Queensland, is the first Australian town to introduce a 3-dimensional zebra crossing, where white blocks appear to rise upwards from the route in an optical illusion.

There are similar crossings in Iceland, Malaysia, India, New Zealand and the United States.

Boulia Shire Quango Mayor Rick Britton said he discovered the crossings on social media.

"I saw that other countries had put 3D crossings in to deadening the traffic down," he said.

"I thought that'd exist a great idea in a picayune outback boondocks like ours."

Councillor Britton said a line-marking device had already been purchased and the rest was history.

"I thought why don't nosotros give it a go," he said.

Tourist attraction and safety measure out

Councillor Britton said the crossing would serve equally an attraction for tourists visiting the region and could open conversation most more than street art in Boulia.

"We'd dearest to start seeing murals on walls instead of having blank corrugated iron sheds … something that students or people can put together with quango partnership.

"I think if nosotros start seeing work like that coming upwards around town we'll definitely go involvement from professional artists who want to offering their services."

Experts call for evaluation

Queensland University of Engineering science'due south Dr Mark King, who works for the Center for Blow Research Road Safety Queensland, said it was difficult to tell whether the project would piece of work.

"It will be something very noticeable which tin can do ane of 2 things: people might get distracted, on the other mitt you lot're noticing the crossing, then people may slow down," he said.

"It is possible it could exist distracting but one of the things that mitigate that a fleck is that you're looking at the pedestrian crossing which is where the hazard is probable to lie.

"So at least if you are fatigued by the visual image your eye is drawn in the right direction."

Dr King said in that location had been a lot of involvement in the area of unique crossings worldwide.

"It's something that'south been interesting a lot of people at the moment," he said.

In March, Cairns Regional Council invested an estimated $30,000 toward a similar crossing.

"It is hoped that the installation of the artwork would encourage motorists to deadening down and add vibrancy to the surface area," a spokeswoman said.

"A review would occur subsequently six months to determine whether changes to motorist and pedestrian behaviour have been observed as a outcome of the trial."

The trial at Pier Signal Route in Cairns will begin later this month.
