I picked this up later reading "The Testament of Mary" because I really needed to take my brain out and launder it with some truth. Part of the reason I was so affected by the same book, despite knowing ahead of time that the character of Mary would be totally maligned, was because the setting, the characters, and the voice of Mary (narrated by Meryl Streep) were And so believable. I was IN that story.Unfortunately, the stories of these vi characters; Joseph, Zechariah, John the Baptist, Elizabeth, James, and Mary; read more like a Christian romance novel than a retelling of the Bible. The voices didn't feel authentic and I found myself skimming to get through it, wishing I were reading my Bible instead, yet dreading getting to the end and writing a three-star review.
Give thanks-you, thank-you for the Bible Report Reader that takes up the concluding third of this book. I LOVED this office. Scripture readings, major points about the characters' behavior and personalities, and a "what tin we larn from this character" section.
3-stars for the stories...5-stars for the Bible written report reader and my brain feels better.

I was intrigued by the idea of seeing Jesus' life from the viewpoint of those closest to Him, rather than having to slice it together from the New Testament, and hither we are given 6 brusque stories, each from the point of view of someone close to Jesus: Joseph, Zechariah, Elizabeth, his cousin John, his brother James, and Mary.Although some of the stories are very, very familiar and didn't add together much that was new to me, others provided explanations for behavior or emotions that I'd never quite understood before - such as when Jesus' mother and brothers try to confront him and he sends them away, or realizing that none of his brothers were at the cross, simply his disciple John. James' human relationship to his brother must have been awkward and wonderful at the aforementioned time.
I loved seeing more of John the Baptist, thinking of him as a child and seeing how he may have learned and grown, and understanding Jesus' relationship to John as adults, running about parallel courses for a while before John'southward ministry building was abruptly ended. I likewise loved the impression of Elizabeth as mentor to Mary, in both life and death, preparing her fashion as her son prepared the mode for Jesus.
I also enjoyed the studies that were provided with each, with questions for individual reflection also every bit separate ones for group discussions. In some cases I got fifty-fifty more than out of the questions and study guides than I did the story.
These aren't packed with details (equally Francine Rivers' books tend to be, but simply let each person's story stand on the facts we are given, extrapolating only some unwritten emotions or consequences, and this makes them easy to read, and easy to consider; you don't get whisked away into a story, merely are faced with the simple truth. Platonic reading, especially at Easter.

With The Family unit of Jesus, Karen Kingsbury uses her talent to take her fans in a new management. She has embarked on a storytelling journey into the realm of Biblical fiction. In my opinion information technology is some of the best work I accept seen from her in a long fourth dimension. That is not to say I haven't enjoyed her contempo works, it is only that this volume feels like her original writing. It is very engaging in its simply told stories.I'm a very picky reader when information technology comes to Biblical fiction. I think in that location is a fine line that shouldn't be crossed and I'm happy to say that Karen stayed on the right side of that line. In fact at the very beginning of the book she explained the parameters that she stuck to in telling the stories.
"From the beginning as I undertook this project, I felt compelled by my dear of the Bible to stick to some hard-and-fast basis rules. The most important was this: The stories had to be anchored in Scripture. In a way, I took the Bible verses on these existent-life characters and stuck them like tent stakes in the desert sand. Nothing could ever violate those truths.
Then I researched the cultural and geographical accuracy and fabricated absolutely sure the tent of the stories didn't billow beyond that.
But otherwise, I let the tent accident in the current of air a little."
So with that in mind I'm pleased to say that this was a wonderful journey through the life of Christ as seen through the eyes of those closest to Him. The story begins with Joseph and winds through Zechariah, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, James and so ends with His mother Mary.
The stories are so well told that I found myself contemplating things that I had never actually considered before. Such as how did Mary and Joseph's families feel about the situation. What kind of shame would be heaped upon Zachariah for remaining childless all those years? Later all he is a priest and his offspring is expected to behave on that priestly line. What would John the Baptist exist like every bit a kid? The Scripture says he was filled with the Spirit from birth. How would that affect his actions and decisions? Every bit you can run into there is lots and lots to ponder during the telling of this line of stories.
The 2d half of the volume is made upwardly of a six week Bible study that takes each of the characters presented and spends five days delving deeper into the background of that person. Each week then ends with a Group Discussion session. This volume would make an excellent modest-grouping study or fifty-fifty an extended Book Order read and give-and-take.
I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

For the first fourth dimension, Karen Kingsbury is diving into writing a Bible study. She simply has a way with a story. She did that hither in the Bible study. She made Joseph, Zechariah, John the Baptist, Elizabeth, James and Mary, more human being in my eyes with the way she wrote out their stories.
Each chapter includes it's own 5 days of study with questions to stop each twenty-four hours. At that place is besides a "For Group Discussion" department at the end of the five days and so a group completing the study together has a guide for give-and-take. And so I could simply feel the turmoil and anger he felt when Mary told him that she was pregnant. Then the feelings turned to belief and joy. The story continues to the glorious nascence and beyond.
The story Zechariah is about the husband of Mary's cousin, Elizabeth. It discusses his and Elizabeth's struggles with infertility issues. Then she becomes significant with John (the Baptist).
The story of John the Baptist is about the cousin of Jesus and the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah. Information technology tells of John'due south life as the preacher and baptizer of the people.
The story of Elizabeth is virtually Mary's cousin and female parent of John the Baptist. Information technology shows an inspiring way how she worked through her grief with faith.
The story of James is nigh the blood brother of Jesus. Information technology tells of how life was like living with Jesus growing up and how James struggles with his faith.
The story of Mary is about the mother of Jesus. This is the most powerful and glorious story of them all. I really could experience the love she had for her son and Savior.
The final part of the volume is a five mean solar day give-and-take and report guide for each of the stories. Which besides includes a section about each of these family members and what the scripture in the Bible says nigh them. I really enjoyed this section.
My thoughts of this book is that information technology is really proficient. It brings life to those who lived with and knew Jesus. Information technology is an inspiring, powerful, and enlightening read. I highly recommend this book! I think information technology would be great to use for book clubs and Bible study groups.

Karen Kingsbury has
The bible is riddled with fallible people whom God uses to carry out His perfect programme. Kingsbury has acknowledged the humanity of Joseph, Zechariah, Elizabeth, James, and Mary – their hopes, fears, and struggles with organized religion. She does not draft the characters every bit super-humans but instead uses their strengths and weaknesses to serve as examples for our ain lives. By doing and then I experience that she has met her goal of creating emotional connections between her readers and the characters.Karen Kingsbury has charted new territory by melding fictional storytelling with a bible study. The wisdom she has gained over the grade of her writing career pours out into this cute and plausible storyline. She successfully intimates her readers with the family of Jesus. I enjoyed how each affiliate gradually built on the concluding in a gentle crescendo that revealed the entire gospel of Christ. A person could cull to read The Family unit of Jesus as a collection of biblical fictions stories but they would miss half the blessing of the book. While Karen Kingsbury has established herself as a fiction writer, she definitely has a knack for composing a rewarding bible study.
The Family unit of Jesus is an excellent choice for book lodge and modest grouping leaders looking to elicit grouping participation. Approximately 75% of the book is devoted to the novellas the remaining 25% is equanimous of study and discussion questions. The brusk stories focus the reader on a grapheme and his or her struggles while the pointed questions encourage the reader's spiritual growth and reflection. This volume could exist a wonderful tool to draw people closer together and deeper into the Give-and-take.
Worthy of 4 stars, The Family of Jesus will be available July 1st from Howard books. I believe Kingsbury'southward adjacent book in the "Heart of the Story Drove" will exist greatly anticipated.

Okay, as I know I've mentioned before on this blog, I love Biblical historical fiction. There's but something so interesting nigh imagining what information technology was really like style back when. And so when I saw that one of my favorite Christian fiction authors was coming out with one nigh the family of Jesus, of course I had to read it.I loved how this book was split into half-dozen different stories--Joseph, Zacharias, John the Baptist, Elizabeth, James, and Mary. We got to see Jesus's life through the perspectives of those who loved Him most. We also got to come across those stories intertwine with each other.
I volition say, sometimes I accept issues with retellings like this, considering really, who are nosotros to say what these people were like, how they acted, what they thought? Specially Jesus. In that location were some parts where I maybe had some issues, because we don't know that they were like that, or that they would have said things like that. I gauge information technology's because some people, similar Jesus, are put on such a loftier pedestal that it'southward just weird to see them, well, human. Just, it's all in the proper name of fiction, and so was not too big of a bargain.
I liked the different perspectives and will admit, at that place were some parts that had me thinking. I suppose I never thought nigh Joseph equally a stepfather, although that's exactly what he was. And to encounter John and Jesus'south human relationship through the eyes of so many unlike people was super interesting and center-opening. I recall these stories actually helped me to see things in a dissimilar low-cal and was and then inspiring.
I idea I wouldn't read the written report part, just I actually did. I didn't split it up into the days (or read the assigned Bible portions...oops). I found them to really be interesting. I actually remember this would be a nifty Bible study to work through with a group of people, although you tin can go a lot out of it by yourself.  All in all, I really enjoyed this 1. It was interesting, and all the same fun, only very inspiring. Information technology fabricated me recall about the Bible and the stories we are all familiar with in a different way.
I received a copy from the publisher, this did not affect my honest opinion.

In The Family of Jesus, #i New York Times bestselling novelist Karen Kingsb Through The Family of Jesus, listeners volition develop an emotional connectedness to the family members of Jesus, learning nearly their lives and falling in love with Scripture forth the mode. Bible studies and devotionals grow, and in churches everywhere people gather to seek a deeper understanding of God'southward word and its application to their lives. Only besides often these studies engage only the analytic approach to Bible learning.
In The Family unit of Jesus, #one New York Times bestselling novelist Karen Kingsbury will brand you laugh, cry, and ultimately care more than deeply about the Bible by helping y'all grasp the truths in Scripture non only with your mind, simply with your heart. The characters in these short stories were among those closest to Jesus—Mary, Joseph, Jesus' blood brother James, John the Baptist, Zechariah, and Elizabeth. Each has a compelling tale to tell. Kingsbury intersperses fictional, emotionally gripping details anchored in Scripture with historical and theological insights and questions that will guide soul-searching and reflection.
The Family of Jesus not but provides a deeper understanding of the relatives of our Savior, merely also helps listeners acquire tools that will describe them closer to Christ, to the Scriptures, and to each other.
I recommend and have recommended this book.
I am a huge fan of Karen's books but this may be ane of my favorites. She brought the Bible to life and taught me things forth the way. I will never look at these people the aforementioned way again. The author opened my optics to their stories and not only what nosotros read just their upper story. Their purpose in Jesus' life.
This is a bang-up read or a great devotional. Y'all have the liberty to read information technology only as a story or to use at a devotional or even use it for your bible study.
I rate this book a 5 out of five stars

3. She was Mary Magdalene, finding Jesus' empty tomb and whatnot and hearing from the angels that Jesus is risen on Resurrection Sunda
Great Biblically-based stories. Neat questions for individual written report or group give-and-take.Only three glaring errors. Karen incorrectly wrote Mama Mary's story equally if...
1. She was following Jesus all along even though she isn't mentioned as a follower until Acts (postal service-crucifixion and resurrection).
2. She was the first to help prepare/dress Jesus' body for burying.
iii. She was Mary Magdalene, finding Jesus' empty tomb and whatnot and hearing from the angels that Jesus is risen on Resurrection Sun. Nosotros know from the Gospels of Luke and John that this is not true.
I don't know why mothers accept this incessant need to overstate Mama Mary's role in Jesus' life and earthly ministry building. This is not the first time that I've seen this. It'south especially egregious in Catholicism.
Other than that, I enjoyed this volume and would recommend it to those who are interested in the family dynamics of Jesus' time on globe. It helped confirm my own family relationship choices.
